In today’s fast-paced world, social media is an awesome way to create brand awareness and to build up a large following.

Social media, without a doubt, help generate traffic for your blog.

But social media is effective only if you’re doing the right things, and in the right places.

With the plethora of social media platforms available, a beginner can easily get overwhelmed.

There’s a pressure to be on every single channel out there so that one does not feel ‘missed-out’.

And with people claiming a particular strategy to be better than the other, it’s not easy to make sense of all the noise.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Quora, Flipboard – you have it all.

So, how do you choose the ones that suit you the most?

Or do you have to carry out all of them at once (if not now but at some later stage in your journey) so that you do not leave out anything that can potentially drive traffic to your blog?

Will it be just a few social media (and not all) for you?

It’s a noisy world out there and so if you’re a beginner, an important lesson you need to learn fast is to stay focused and not get distracted with all that’s happening around. It’s easy to get distracted, you know.

With so many new skills to learn – WordPress, content creation, SEO, designing banners – deciding which social media channel to concentrate on is not easy.

Content writing itself is time-consuming and it goes without saying that for any traffic strategy to work, you need to have a good body of work on your blog.

Then, you have email marketing to take care of. You are told to start building a list immediately.

Not all social media channels will be equally effective for your blog.

It depends on your niche too.

Platforms like Instagram are more popular among the younger people and hence, if your target audience is the elderly people, your blog may not lend itself to Instagram at all.

Trying out every social media channel out there will definitely eat into your time. It may not be possible to find time to master any of them effectively.

Instead, try to grow an engaged audience through 1-2 social media channels.

If you can learn other SEO techniques for organic traffic effectively, you will have a nice jump-start.

Once you have mastered those and you have an audience built from the work you’ve done there, then you can expand to other channels.

It’s easy to get disheartened when things don’t seem to work after you have invested your time and energy in 1-2 social media channels.

You might be even tempted to jump on to other ‘trending’ channels to see if they work for you in the same way they do for many other people.

But, like everything else, it takes time for a social media channel to mature and for you to learn everything about it.

It’s always worth giving a channel the chance to work. There’s a fine line between investing time in a channel that isn’t working versus not investing enough time to really give it a chance to work.



Identify Your Goal for the Next Six Months or a Year

You can try each of them one by one, and identify those (limit yourself to one or two) channels that help you the most in achieving your goal and concentrate only on them,

The next step for you will be to identify the best social media channels for you to work on.

It’s no use getting flustered with trying to engage yourself with all the available channels.

Focus on only one or two, and when they start working for you, you can try other channels.

Watch Out for Your Competitor’s Content Shares

You have to be watchful of the shares of your competitor’s content in the different social media channels.

You can use tools like Buzzsumo to get this information.

If in your niche, you see a lot of your competitor’s content being shared by people on Facebook, it is an indicator that there’s a good audience for your content on this social media channel.

  • Thanks for shedding more light on the usage of social networks for better online recognition. When I started using social media, it looked vast and I have to narrow my usage to two alone which is Facebook and Twitter which I realise are the best for me. It really gave me the focus I needed in marketing just like you observed too. I’m happy I found an online proof to back my theory up, keep doing the good work. 

    • It took me a lot of mistakes and time wasted to understand that I do not need to put myself out there on every social media channel. Glad to know that Facebook and Twitter are working for you. I have been able to learn that one should focus on that social media channel with the highest traffic source and focus on it from your post which I really do appreciate. Quora can drive traffic but you will need to invest time in building up your personal brand by engaging with other people there.   • I realise that social media is a fantastic tool to help bloggers and online entrepreneurs market their products and business successfully to their teeming audience. However, active participation in a handful of social media websites can be tasking. 

    Personally, because I run a sports-related business, I chose Twitter and Instagram to promote my blog on social media. So far, I must say I’m seeing relatively good traffic.

    Hence, I absolutely agree with your post. It’s vital to start small to effectively engage your audience.

You’re using Twitter and Instagram because that suits you and your business most. But that does not mean, these channels could be effective for another person because of the niche he’s in. The best way forward for a beginner is to limit oneself to 1-2 channels only.

  • I am really baffled by the number of people that open up to 5 social media accounts when they are just starting out. I have no idea how they plan on maintaining them with all the work that has to be put into content creation. Mastering how to effectively use a social media channel can actually take a lot of time so why split your effort into 5 places when you have not even mastered one. 

    You definitely would not be efficient and some of those accounts would turn out to not been fully utilized because your effort is split into various places. I believe going for at most two accounts is the best thing to do for anyone just starting out online.

I ended up getting frustrated and becoming less productive with my content creation efforts. Like you, I was (and still is) more familiar with Facebook. I hardly used Twitter G+. I had never used Pinterest before. But I thought that a blogger needs to learn all those and therefore, I wasted a lot of time in trying to learn them. Took up many courses from Udemy and other places but none worked because I couldn’t give time. In the end, I gave it all up and concentrated more on content creation. After I had enough posts on board, then and only did I start learning those social media lessons again all over. But this time, I took one up one social media channel at a time and gave it and myself time to grow. It worked wonders.

But when you do that, make sure you pick one that you think suits you most and give it time to grow. If it works, fine. If not, jump to a different platform.   • You have given some sound advice about social platforms and I for one appreciated that because one can become so consumed in each one that you don’t get any productive work done if you become sidetracked!

    I totally agree with your concept of using only the ones that work for you and your chosen niche.  If we were to try and use all of them, we would not sleep and eventually burn out.

    G+ is on it’s way out, so there’s a bit of relief to start with.

    Personally, I have tried Facebook and I don’t think it has played a vital role in my online business.  I’m currently using Pinterest and Instagram and will see where these lead me in my endeavours to drive traffic to my websites.

    However, I will point out that you have to have content before you can even start to think of using social platforms.  They are an added bonus to what you’ve already done.  I found that out the hard way and had to go back to square one and concentrate on my content first.

    • Thanks for reading my post. You are right when you say you need content on board before you try using social media for traffic. Towards the beginning, I was doing everything at a time – learning SEO, cranking out blog posts, and social media. They were eating into my time and I was not doing enough on the content creation part. I was having less time for it because of my efforts in trying to be on every social media platform. I learnt that I needed to concentrate on content creation first and have a good body of content.

    Thank you for this informative, and helpful article. I so agreed with you that we should only concentrate on one or two social media networks that most relevant to your niche rather than focusing on all networks because it consumes a a lot of time. It also depends on your target audience. 

    In my opinion, just spend an hour or half on social media platforms. Otherwise, you won’t have the time to build your business. Alternatively, you can use automation like Tailwind, Buffer, Hotspot to schedule your article posting in relevant platforms.

    • Thanks for visiting my site, Shui Hyen. This social media thing really consumes a lot of time. I made the mistake in trying to be on every channel. Took up all those courses too. But I could not do justice to most of them because I cannot dig up more time than 24 hours in a day 🙂 I have to sleep too. Anyway, I learnt my lesson and instead of trying to have my fingers on too many pies, I took one step at a time, and it worked. I need to find out more about Buffer and Hotspot as you suggested.

    • Glad that you found my post useful. We learn to stick to a few social media channels only towards the beginning. Otherwise, in our attempt to be seen on every network, we end up being largely invisible as far as getting the desired blog traffic is concerned. Which one to work? Well, that’s for you to decide because what works for me might not work for you and vice-versa. Also, each social media has its own learning curve and it takes time to finally be able to come to terms with them.
