How long did it take for me to start a blog?
That’s a very common question that people ask me on a daily basis.
“It took me years” is my answer to which, almost automatically, the next question that I have to confront is “What took you so long to start your own blog?”
I really don’t know what took me so long to start my own blog after the initial idea to start one first struck me many years back.
In fact, it was in 2012 that I first fancied having a blog. I did start one on Google’s free Blogger platform.
But despite my honest interest, I couldn’t carry it forward to have a real active blog.
The main reason was I didn’t have a specific topic to blog on.
After writing one post, which was more of a diary entry after a cousin of mine died after committing suicide, I was clueless as to what I should be writing in my next post.
I used to search on “how to start a blog” and I got many answers in the form of blogs, blog posts, videos, and online training classes.
To a complete newbie like me, the information was a bit too much to take in.
So much for my nascent blogging dream.
The Alluring Idea of the Laptop Lifestyle
The blogging idea happened mostly because of my interest in writing.
It was not as if I considered myself a great writer but I loved putting my thoughts on paper.
But other than a few official correspondences and the occasional status updates and comments on Facebook, my skill as a writer had never been tested seriously before.
So, I was also curious to see how I would fare if I start blogging regularly.
Then there was the money angle. I used to read about many successful bloggers and how they used to make a good income online through their blogs.
I loved that idea of having a passive income and what they call the “laptop lifestyle”.
As I was looking all over the Internet about blogging and making money online, I came across many money-making schemes available online.
I am, by nature, a very cautious person and I was not just prepared to take the bait from the many get-rich-quick schemes that were pushed to me.
Very soon, my mail inbox was flooded with offers and I found it somewhat annoying.
There was also the money transfer part. I still remember I was almost at the point of making a payment for a scheme but I somewhat could not make the transaction via Paypal.
I’m glad that the payment never happened because later I learned that it was a fly-by-night scheme.
A scam, I would call it.
Like many of my short-lived business ideas, it seemed as if my blogging dream was destined for premature death.
Nothing happened for many years and life just went on.
The Internet was a chaotic place and it was very difficult to search for a definite path on which I could travel on.
I wanted some sort of a course which was easy on my pocket with lessons that were actionable and suited to my busy office schedule.
I wanted something that I could work at my own pace.
At that time, I didn’t know about WordPress and how easy it was to create a blog.
So, while I was all set to sharpen my writing skills, I always thought that the main work of creating and designing my blog was to be performed through an expert in website designing.
How wrong I was!
Wealthy Affiliate for Beginners
I started writing this post with the intention of showing aspiring Internet entrepreneurs or bloggers about an easy way to start an online career.
It does not matter whether you’re a beginner or someone with good technical skills of website creation. We all want a simple way to do it, don’t we?
It’s a noisy world out there and we want all our resources for a thriving online business in one place.
We want a course that is designed to suit everybody, including the complete newbies.
This is where Wealthy Affiliate comes in.
My blogging journey would be incomplete without the mention of the Wealthy Affiliate platform and its amazing community through which I learned the craft of blogging and what it means to monetise a website.
It’s a complete package – good lessons, training videos, weekly webinars, 24×7 live chat, free Jaaxy Keyword Tool, instant technical support, free hosting for 50 websites (25 on siterubix subdomains and 25 on your own domains), access to the owners and its million-plus-member-community who themselves are a source of inspiration and support for beginners.
There are more detailed writings on Wealthy Affiliate on this blog itself. Do read them if you’re curious to know more.
We Need Guidance in the Beginning
The most challenging aspect for anybody who wants to set foot in the highly competitive and constantly evolving world of Internet marketing is the lack of good guidance to make sense of all the noise happening there.
There’s a sea of information out there and one could get easily drowned in the cacophony.
- How to start?
- Which training platform to select that is legit and not a scam?
- How to learn something that looks as challenging as website creation when you have no prior technical knowledge about it?
- How to meaningfully take small steps to assimilate everything in a logical sequence?
- And if you’re a busy person with a 9-5 job, how to go about learning everything at your own pace?
- How to get support at any time of the day, whether in the morning or at midnight?
- What are the things to be avoided as a beginner?
- How to gradually climb up the lessons?
- How to challenge yourself to the limit?
- What are the best monetising methods?
- What kind of scams is happening on the Internet and how to identify a scam from a legit scheme?
- How to get help and from whom to get it?
- Is there a training platform where everything – training lessons or videos – could be accessed at any time?
- Will the course burn your pocket?
- Will there be upsells, like it happens everywhere, where in order to access the higher level of training, you will have to shell out a few more bucks?
- Will the training equip you with all the necessary knowledge for a successful online business or blogging?
- Will it teach content creation?
- Will it teach best SEO practices?
- What about keeping yourself updated with the latest happenings in the online business world?
In short, people want something that would make them independent Internet marketers, to be able to stand on their own feet.
There are many training platforms available for beginners but except for Wealthy Affiliate, I cannot write about anything else for the simple reason that I haven’t had experience on any.
But at the risk of sounding too promotional, I would say Wealthy Affiliate is a good platform for beginners. They have flexible payment options too, including a FREE Starter Membership to have a feel of how it feels like to be inside of it.
If you’re hesitant about making any payment, why don’t you have a first-hand experience of its free membership? You’ve got nothing to lose.
Wealthy Affiliate provides the basic road map for complete newbies to make sense of the myriad information on Internet marketing found on the web.
It’s no magic bullet though and your success depends on how hard you work and how quickly you adapt to changing situations.
Remember, there’s no such thing as an overnight success story in Internet marketing.
There’s Never an End to Learning
The Internet world is a constantly changing landscape. And so is Internet marketing.
People’s tastes, preferences, access to technology, the Internet as the technology itself, trends, economics, and lifestyle keep on changing.
Internet marketing is driven by people’s preferences and online buying behaviour.
You do not stop learning. Every day is a learning experience.
So, when people ask me how to start an online business, I would tell them to seek an online training platform to learn the basics of how the whole Internet business works and how one could monetise a website.
The Wealthy Affiliate that I mentioned above was just an example.
There are scores of training platforms available.
Pick one that suits your budget and your needs.
The Internet is already a big graveyard for Internet business start-ups. The failure rate is just too high.
How Does it All Add Up To?
It’s difficult to explain in one single blog what it takes to be successful in Internet marketing.
It’s a combination of discrete variables, each with a distinct direction and character of its own.
How one affects the other to produce a result depends on different permutation and combinations of strategies.
What works for me may not work for you.
We all have different life situations and our growth graph will also be different.
But one thing remains true with everyone – it’s the result of how much work you put into your business.
If anybody told you Internet marketing is easy, just know that it’s not true.
It’s damn hard.
But when you do achieve success, it is extremely gratifying.
If you have been seeking for a perfect platform for beginners, then Wealthy Affiliate is a safe bet.
And like I said, it’s completely FREE for you to try it out.
