Why you should start a blog

Why People Start A Blog – The Top 10 Reasons

I have always wanted to start a blog of my own. Part of the reason why I wanted to blog was because I have a passion for writing, I have the ability to put my thoughts in written words. I may not be the best writer there is, but I could express myself better through writing than an average person. Many people ask me if money was the reason behind my starting a blog but it couldn’t be further from the truth. I knew there were people doing good business and making huge amounts of money through blogging, but my initial attraction wasn’t money. However, I thought if by blogging I could earn some money on the way that would be really wonderful. But I would not have been too bothered if I didn’t make any money also.

Reasons for starting a blogWhile people start blogging for various reasons, the most important would be one’s need to have a creative outlet and to be heard. It’s a wonderful personal experience to have a space of one’s own on the internet and to be able to say things one is truly passionate about. Be it politics, fashion, technology, health, parenting, yoga, beauty tips, gardening or any hobby, if you truly have a passion and can document your own experiences in written words, starting a blog becomes the natural step towards making a mark of your own. Important reasons why people blog are:

#1: Passion for writing

Like me, there are many people whose primary intention to start blogging is the passion for writing. These people mostly write for themselves and starting a blog is akin to creating an online diary for the world to read. Well, that’s what blogging really is – you write for your own. These people aren’t too concerned with what blogging platform they use, how to attract ‘customers’, how to attract traffic, etc. They blog simply because they love to write. And it this passion that’s going to sustain the blog for years to come.

Refining the writing skills#2: Refine the writing skills

Writing, like all other forms of communication, becomes better with practice. Hence, some people start a blog to hone their writing skills. Most bloggers write regular posts and become better at writing after starting a blog. Blogging is an interactive medium too and when readers comment or give their feedback, you naturally become more aware of your abilities and the areas that need improvement.

#3: Express your thoughts and feelings

Blogging allows you to express your opinions and thoughts on any topic you like. Whether it is politics, sports, health, technology, gadgets, philosophy, spiritualism, science, music, fashion, if you have a passion in anything, you may want to share your thoughts to the world through a blog. And the best thing is, you will be heard!

#4: Connecting with like-minded peopleConnecting with like-minded people

The best way to connect or network with like-minded people is through a blog. Once a blog becomes popular, it virtually becomes a community where thoughts are shared, discussed and debated upon. If you have a passion for a particular activity or area and start blogging, and as you start attracting a loyal following who share your interest and concerns.

#5: Helping people

When blogs are written about one’s personal experiences and how they were able to overcome them, people who are going these very experiences are helped by reading the writings there. Many blogs are written on topics related to stress, parenting, depression, tech-support, financial issues, and most of these written through the personal experiences of the bloggers themselves. These blogs not only document the struggles or the success stories but help the visitors by way of interactions or by commenting, thus serving as an online forum for them.

#6: Earn more exposure

Blogs help you establish yourself as an expert in your chosen area and gain more widespread exposure. When you start a blog, people begin to acknowledge your talents which otherwise would have gone unnoticed.

For instance, if you’re starting a blog on “how to make money online” by writing on your own experiences, the scams, the legitimate ways, website building, creating website traffic, your success stories, your failures, or any such experience on your journey, you could well establish your own personal brand in the internet space. You will have a wide online presence and become an authority in the online business field. Similarly, if your blog is based on a scientific study, blogging could help you legitimise your expertise. You might, in the process, attract potential employers or sponsors even for your activity.

#7: Have fun and enhance creativityHave fun with blogging

Most bloggers start their blog purely out of fun as a leisure activity. With a blog, you are at your creative best since you are writing about your most loved activity. It is the passion that fires the engine of your blog and no wonder you have immense fun doing that. A blog is the best creative outlet one can have.

#8: Promoting business

If you own a business, gaining an online visibility is necessary to get subscribers, buyers, promoters and leads. These will all ultimately lead to more revenue. If you create a blog that brings out the latest trends and news about your business, and if you can inform the readers by creating content that is engaging, helpful, it surely attracts more customers for your business.

#9: Keeping knowledge updatedKeeping one's knowledge updated

Blogging involves creating new content frequently. You need to be supplying your readers and fans updated and fresh information in your chosen field or topic all the time. This spurs you to keep yourself abreast of the latest trends and happenings and to update your knowledge. Being interactive, a blog will attract comments and new inputs from the readers as well which helps you see things from different perspectives. In short, blogging keeps you on your toes all the time as far as remaining active or knowledgeable in a field is concerned.

#10: Earn moneyEarn money by blogging

This is an important reason for starting a blog for many people. You must have heard of people who are making money by blogging. Yes, people do earn money by blogging. It is possible to monetise this ‘hobby’ of yours. If you already have a thriving activity on your blog where lots of visitors are already there, then making money is all too easy. However, if you are just about to start a blog of your own with the sole aim of making money online, things will not be easy if you do not have a passion for an activity. In fact, without passion, there is no purpose in a blog, and earning money through blogging can remain a far-fetched dream. For a blog to earn money, you need to have a well-defined roadmap, strategies and have valuable and engaging content in a specific niche.

But if you have a hobby, if you have a passion for an activity, earning money through blogging is relatively easy. It takes time, trials and tribulations, effort and dedication, but once you can create a blog with a good readership, and if you start attracting good traffic to your blog, the income will start trickling in, slowly but surely. This income can only grow in time, and this is how many people earn income from blogging. All from the comforts of one’s home. Neat, isn’t it?

  • Yeah, probably most start blogging for the ability to earn money. But if there’s no passion involved, it’s probably not going to work. Simply because you must enjoy what you do and when it comes to blogging, it’s basically impossible to do it if you hate doing it! It’s really important to find the right niche that you feel passionate about. Then it becomes way easier! And the money starts flowing after some time…

    • Yes, people jump on the make-money-online bandwagon thinking money starts trickling in (if not flowing in) once if have a website up and running. Content wins but it’s difficult creating content regularly without any passion involved. Thanks for chiming in!
